October 1 Eighth grade students continue to conjugate present tense regular -ar, -er and -ir verbs. They are really doing fantastic and this will be a great preview to their high school language course next year. Great job, eighth graders!!
17 de septiembre This week included a look at Spanish subject pronouns and an introduction to our main unit of study this semester, which will be conjugating verbs in the present tense. This particular unit will be very helpful for the eighth grade students next year in high school, when they will be working towards their two years required study of a language.
10 de septiembre Our first few Spanish classes have included a review of our Basic Routine that will begin each class; this includes asking and answering Como estas? (including the correct verbs and adjectives), asking about and describing the weather, going over the calendar (hoy, manana, ayer y la fecha) as well as the Hail Mary prayer in Spanish. This information will also become part of the students' oral Spanish grade. We practiced aloud, we wrote the information in our notebooks, and finally we reviewed and practiced in small groups with two fun games called "Cucharas" or spoons, and ZAP! I am looking forward to a wonderful year.
27 de agosto Eighth grade Spanish classes have begun! All students meet once a week for class (either on Tuesday or Thursday morning) for 40 minutes. Our first meeting included a discussion of our important class rules, consequences and classroom procedures, as well as a discussion of the Grading Policy. 9 de mayo The eighth grade students took a break from our regular schedule to work with one of our First grade homerooms. The eighth graders led the first graders in creating mini-books in Spanish that included information about the students' likes, families, appearances and more. The first graders took these books home and had a great time working with our eighth grade class. Check out our pictures to the left.
22 de abril Finished up our last activity on the Senor Wooly website, which was the song and video titled "El Recreo Ha Terminado". We were able to work with the new Spanish vocab and phrases in the song, as well as take a look at the past tense of the verbs in the lyrics. We also worked in small groups to rearrange the Spanish word order of the sentences. Great job, eighth graders.
18 de marzo Took a break from our regular work to have a Game Day in the 8th grade classes. We worked through 3 centers - one was a small group game using our Spanish phrases and vocab from the "Excusas" song, another center involved playing "Telefono por escrito", and the final center included the portable laptops using the fun links off of this website as well as the games link off of Senor Wooly's website.

4 de marzo We have now begun using Senor Wooly's website and the very first song and video we have been working with is titled "Las Excusas". We have also been using the corresponding practice pages - that include a Spanish lyrics page, a student opinion page - in Spanish only, and finally a page of "oraciones revueltas" in which the students have to put some of the Spanish lyrics from the Excusas song into proper order.
7 de febrero Eighth graders continue to work with Senorita Ramos (see last entry) and are doing a great job! They are now working in small groups to create "mi cuarto fantastico", and they will be presenting this project to the class next week.
10 de enero The Thursday eighth grade students are so lucky to be working with Senorita Ramos, our new student teacher from North Park University! The first unit they will be working with includes the rooms of a house and what is inside each room!
11 de diciembre Today's class worked in small groups on a review page that contained some useful and basic classroom Spanish phrases that will come in handy for those students who plan on taking Spanish next year in high school.
27 de noviembre Eighth graders have now begun presenting their Spanish storybooks to the class as we translate the text aloud (see last entry)!
13 de noviembre The eighth graders continue to work in their small groups using a variety of Spanish translations of popular storybooks for children (see last entry).
6 de noviembre We passed back/discussed our test on present tense verb conjugations (see last entry). We have now begun a new group activity that will involve using the Spanish version of popular children's story books.

The students worked together to ask and answer questions of each other using Spanish only. Our classes also included a discussion of our important class rules, consequences and classroom procedures. 27 de marzo The eighth grade students have been working on two different Spanish text translations. We are able to use our prior knowledge of present tense verbs, adjectives we have learned and other vocab that allows us to complete these translations. They are doing a great job!!

17 de enero Feliz ano nuevo! Happy New Year! Passed back and discussed quizzes. We will now be working on something new; we are working with an interactive web based mystery that can be found on BBC's website. It is called Mi Vida Loca and we worked on Episode 1 that had us reviewing some basic and essential Spanish phrases as we took a look around the Spanish capital city of Madrid. This site is geared at teaching theme specific vocab for real life settings such as ordering food in a restaurant, shopping, getting directions but also provides us with a look at some Spanish culture and geography all while giving us a wonderful and scenic view of this Spanish city.

Week #4 We are now applying the skills we learned last week to some practice pages. We worked through one page together and then the students tried working through another on their own. Soon we will use our knowledge of Spanish pronouns to help us conjugate verbs in the present tense.

Week #27 Week #24 Eighth grade took a break from our usual lessons to learn a little about how Holy Week, or Semana Santa is celebrated in Spanish speaking countries. We read an article describing the “pasos” – the processions seen in Spain during Holy Week and also learned about the beautiful “alfombras” (carpets) made in Guatemala as part of Easter week. We discussed similarities and differences between our cultural celebrations of this holiday and the celebrations in Spanish speaking countries. Week #23 Graded, passed back and discussed our previous work from Mi Vida Loca; we will continue to work with this website! Week #22 Passed back and discussed our translations (graded); we will get back to Vida Loca after this week!
Week #21 Week #13 Took a QUIZ on present tense verb conjugations! Week #12 Passed back graded papers and discussed our work with -er, -ir and -ar Spanish verbs. Week #11 Tuesday's 8th grade did not meet due to the Holiday concert. Thursday's group continued our work with verb conjugations.
Week #10 Week #8 Eight grade pronouns Quizzes were passed back and discussed. Also, we watched a powerpoint presentation that taught the students how to conjugate regular present tense -er and -ir Spanish verbs. We will continue to work with -ar, -er, and -ir Spanish verb conjugations.
Week #7 Eighth graders took a Quiz on Spanish pronouns. We learned some new Spanish -ar verbs in the infinitive form and began to conjugate them in the present tense.
Week #6 Eighth graders reviewed our work from last week that included correct use of Spanish pronouns. We continue to work with present tense conjugations of (regular) -ar Spanish verbs (see last entry).
