8 de octubre This week our Tuesday and Thursday classes began working through the introductory chapter of our textbook. This included a look at the location on the map of the 22 Spanish speaking countries in our world. This intro unit also describes for us why it important to learn Spanish and gives some study strategies to help us learn it. We will finish with the intro chapter next week (that includes a review of el alfabeto as well as more Spanish basic phrases for the classroom)and then move on to Chapter 1 of our text.
17 de septiembre Fifth graders are learning about definite and indefinite articles in Spanish. We used an interactive powerpoint on the computer projector to help learn and practice these concepts in the Spanish language.
10 de septiembre Our first few Spanish classes have included a review of our Basic Routine that will begin each class; this includes asking and answering Como estas? (including the correct verbs and adjectives), asking about and describing the weather, going over the calendar (hoy, manana, ayer y la fecha) as well as the Hail Mary prayer in Spanish. This information will also become part of the students' oral Spanish grade. We practiced aloud, we wrote the information in our notebooks, and finally we reviewed and practiced in small groups with two fun games called"Cucharas" or spoons, and ZAP! They are doing a great job!! I am looking forward to a wonderful year.
27 de agosto Fifth grade Spanish classes have begun! All students meet once a week for class (either on Tuesday or Thursday morning) for 40 minutes. Our first meeting included a discussion of our important class rules, consequences and classroom procedures, as well as a discussion of the Grading Policy. 18 de marzo More practice with "Las Excusas" (see last entry). We worked on a sequencing page in which the 8 main sentences were put into the order we hear them in the Spanish song.
11 de marzo Moving on to the second video we will be working with this semester - it is titled "las excusas" and it details in Spanish 8 interesting reasons why a student did not complete her Spanish homework! We are working with some of the new vocab and the lyrics. Great job, fifth graders!

19 de febrero Continued practice with our song and video from Sr. Wooly's website titled "Puedo ir al bano?" (see last entry).
5 de febrero We have now moved on to our next song and video from Sr. Wooly's website titled, "Puedo ir al bano?" that includes some useful phrases to know in Spanish class! Ha! The students learned some new vocab and used it to fill in the lyrics page, we are also looking forward to singing the karoake version of this song in class!!
24 de enero In conjuction with our Spanish adjectives unit, we are using Sr. Wooly's "Guapo" video to reinforce our vocabulary.
10 de diciembre We continue to work with Spanish adjectives and describing words; we are currently making paragraph descriptions of ourselves that include hair color, eye color, likes and dislikes as well as personality traits. These papers will all be put into a pile which we will read aloud one at a time and guess which student is being described in Spanish!
27 de noviembre Completed our Wanted Posters using our describing words vocabulary as well as Spanish verbs to make complete sentences. We finished with a fun review game in small groups to help practice these words aloud.
13 de noviembre Fifth graders continue to work with adjectives and descriptions of personality and appearance in Spanish; we are currently working on Wanted! posters that describe the students in our class!
6 de noviembre We have now begun our next unit of their year which includes describing ourselves and others (using Spanish adjectives and describing words). We will continue with this chapter for the next couple of classes.
16 de octubre After finishing up with our interviews, we were able to listen to students reading aloud some of their Spanish sentences telling their likes and dislikes as well as those of their classmates.
2 de octubre Continued work with Me gusta plus infinitives(see last week). The students also worked in small groups to interview each other using Spanish only to talk about their likes and dislikes.

The students worked with a partner to describe their hair color, eye color and personality traits in Spanish. Then they created a Venn Diagram to show their similarities and differences (using Spanish only).
27 de febrero Taking a break from our Voicethreads until we can get a time slot scheduled in the computer lab. In the meantime, we have begun our last unit for the year, Describing your appearance and personality (as well as others) in Spanish. 13 de febrero Finally we have begun our voicethreads project. This includes using a website where the students record themselves speaking in Spanish, in complete Spanish sentences and covering some of the various concepts we have covered so far this year. We will post them here on our website when they are finished!!

Week #7 Continued work in the Etapa Preliminar in our textbook. We also corrected and graded our work in our Spanish notebooks. Week #6 Thursday's class will not meet due to Junior Achievement. Tuesday's class worked in the textbook with our intro unit that includes a look at why we learn Spanish, the countries of the world that Speak Spanish and also a list of Spanish boy and girl names that the students wanted to use this year in class!

Week #4 Thursday's class did not meet due to track-a-thon. On Tuesday, we worked with a Spanish powerpoint and learned how to talk about the weather in Spanish. We will continue to practice this info next week.
Week #3 We watched a Spanish powerpoint to learn how the Spanish calendar is similar to and also different from our English calendar. We learned how to say the days of the week, the months, the seasons of the year, and we learned how to say the date in Spanish. Week #2 We continued to work with our basic routine questions that we will be starting off each class with. These include saying aloud how you and others are feeling (using the verbs Estoy and Esta with an adjective), also answering calendar related questions in complete Spanish sentences (Hoy es.... manana es... ayer fue... la fecha es...). We are also continuing to work on weather related questions and answers in Spanish to describe the weather of the day. The fifth graders are also now practicing reciting the Sign of the Cross and the Hail Mary prayer in Spanish.

Week #29 Finished reading aloud our self descriptions that were written completely in Spanish. The class used the Spanish adjective clues being read aloud to guess who was being described! Week#27 To celebrate Cinco de mayo, the fifth graders invited the kindergarten and first grade homerooms to our classes to work on some Spanish language games and activities. The fifth grade students acted as the Teachers for small groups of younger students and we had a great time working together. Great job, fifth grade!! 26 de abril Back from break! These papers will all be put into a pile which we will read aloud one at a time and guess which student is being described in Spanish! 12 de abril Fifth graders took a break from our usual lessons to learn a little about how Holy Week, or Semana Santa, is celebrated in Spanish speaking countries. We read an article describing the “pasos” – the processions seen in Spain during Holy Week and also learned about the beautiful “alfombras” (carpets) made in Guatemala as part of Easter week. We also took a look at pictures online of actual alfombras being made in Antigua, Guatemala. The students also learned about velaciones, andas and cucuruchos as well as discussing similarities and differences between our country and Spanish speaking countries' cultural celebrations of this holiday. 31 de marzo Fifth graders continue to work with adjectives and descriptions of personality and appearance in Spanish; we are currently working on Wanted! posters that describe the students in our class!
24 de marzo Week#14 Passed back and discussed quizzes. Also discussed notebook grades, as well as semester grades. Week #13 Took a QUIZ on our definite and indefinite articles. Week #12 Continued practice with definite and indefinite articles in Spanish.

Week #10 Fifth graders are now presenting their Spanish dialogs to the class that they created with a partner (see last entry). Week #9 Fifth graders continue to practice saying where you and others are from, introducing yourself and others, and greetings/goodbyes in Spanish. They are currently starting to create by Spanish dialogs with a partner and will be presenting these to the class.
October 28 (No Tuesday class due to Junior Achievement). We passed back our graded notebooks and went over the scores; students also received a grade on their scavenger hunt project. Next week we will continue to work with saying where you and others are from, introducing yourself and others, and greetings/goodbyes in Spanish by creating Spanish dialogs in small groups and presenting these to the class.
October 19 & 21 Today's class began with our routine for speaking and listening practice (see previous entry), and the fifth graders are doing a great job! We also finished up our textbook scavenger hunt. Finally, we are moving on with our unit in the book which includes Spanish greetings and goodbyes, saying where you and others are from, and introducing yourself and others.
