7 de octubre Continued practice with "los partes del cuerpo" (see last entry). We worked through a cut and paste practice page in which the students were able to label the parts of the body with the Spanish vocab word. This page was sent home. Great job, first graders!
16 de septiembre Our first unit this year is "los partes del cuerpo" or Parts of the Body. We practiced the words aloud in class, and also sent a page home with this information if you would like to practice some more with your child. We will be working on this unit for the next couple of classes.
26 de agosto Today was first grade's first day back in Spanish class! It was great to see all the smiling faces from Room 11 and Room 10! First graders will meet for Spanish once a week, on Tuesdays, for 30 minutes. Please check back for updates including more videos and photos as we learn this school year!!

11 de marzo Continued work in our end of the year review journals (see last entry). This week included a review of Los partes del cuerpo.
4 de marzo We have now begun our end of the year review; we will be making end of the year word journals with all the themes we have covered in First Grade. Our first two pages are a review of Feelings words and los objetos de la clase. We will be working on these the next couple of weeks and these books will be sent home when completed!

12 de febrero First graders continued to practice our new Classroom objects words. 10 de diciembre First graders continue to practice calendar words in Spanish and related vocabulary - today we worked on los meses (months) and these pages were sent home.
2 de diciembre In conjunction with the first grades' Christmas Around the World project in their homerooms, the students discussed the Mexican legend of the poinsettia. We learned about how this plant came to be a symbol of Christmas in many countries of the world. We also read aloud the Legend of the Poinsettia in class and then created our own paper poinsettias to add to the students' traveling "suitcases" in their homerooms.
27 de noviembre We are now learning how to say los dias de la semana, or the days of the week. We practiced our words and then we created a wheel manipulative with this information; this was sent home if you would like extra practice!!
11 de noviembre Took a break from our regular unit to talk about "El dia de accion de gracias", or Thanksgiving! We made special books to take home that included what we are thanksful for ..."Doy gracias por - " as well as some Spanish words for the foods that we like to eat on Thanksgiving.
29 de octubre More practice with los partes del cuerpo. We also had fun with a Spanish read aloud of Eric Carle's popular story "De la cabeza a los pies" (From Head to Toe). The children predicted our Spanish body parts words in the story and acted out the actions we heard on each page. Good job, first graders!
16 de octubre Today we finished up our skeletons (see last entry), working in small groups and we put a Spanish label on the skeleton using of parts of the body vocab. We will use some of these to decorate the hallway outside of our room. We will continue to practice los partes del cuerpo next week.
October 8 No School - Columbus Day!!
October 1 First graders are now moving on to a new unit of words, los partes del cuerpo - parts of the body. We practiced our words out loud, then we got in to small groups to work on a new project with our words. We created skeletons and then labeled their body parts with our Spanish vocab words.
24 de septiembre Today we practiced our Spanish words and phrases in partner groups with a fun picture card game. The students raced their partner to grab the picture card that matched the Spanish word or phrase I said aloud. We finished with a read aloud "Como van a la escuela los dinosaurios? Great job, first graders!!
17 de septiembre Today's first grade classes continued to practice with our Sentimientos vocab. We practiced our words aloud and then in writing by finishing our papers from last week (see last entry). We ended class with a read aloud called "Say Hola to Spanish". 10 de septiembre We have begun working with a new unit of words, los sentimientos, or Feelings! Now we will have much more interesting answers to our ?Como estas? question. We practiced our words aloud as well as with a written practice page that included illustrations.
3 de septiembre Labor Day - no school!
27 de agosto Today was first grade's first day back in Spanish class! It was great to see all their smiling faces! First graders will meet for Spanish once a week for 30 minutes. Our first day included a read aloud of the Spanish story "David va al colegio" and this helped us talk about class rules. The children were able to write down one of the rules in Spanish that we discussed from the book and decorated their paper with a drawing of our amigo David! I am looking forward to a great year! 27 de marzo The first graders have been working with "los Sentimientos" or Feelings words. We now have many interesting responses to my Como estas? question!! The children worked in partner groups to play a fun card grab game using our vocab. We have also created a mini-book includes these new describing words; this was sent home. This is our last unit of the year and we will soon begin our end of the year review.

14 de febrero Feliz dia de la Amistad! We took a break from out regular unit of "La Ropa", and the students made Spanish valentines to give to someone special; maybe you got one!!
31 de enero Today's first grade classes went to the computer lab and worked on our fun links section of this website. We were able to practice our Clothing vocab on one of the games, ask your child to show you!
24 de enero The first graders continue to practice Spanish Clothing words, this week with two activities - some written practice pages with our vocab, and then a fun listening practice game in which the students had to race in pairs to grab the vocab word that I said aloud, out of a box full of clothes.
17 de enero We are now beginning a new unit, LA ROPA! (Clohting words). We created mini make and take Spanish books titled "Dia de nieve". These books contain some of our new vocab. We read the books aloud in Spanish and some volunteers even read in front of the class! Feel free to read this mini book at home also.
10 de enero Welcome back and Happy New Year!! The first grade classes continued to practice our days of the week and calendar information in Spanish. We got into small groups and worked through two centers with our dias de la semana vocab. One center was a memory game with our Spanish and English words, and the other was a board game with our Spanish and English words. The first graders are doing a great job!!

We worked on a practice page and used listening skills to select the correct picture to match it. This page was sent home. We also reviewed some of the concepts we learned last year with some of our old favorite Spanish songs.

24 de mayo Today we rotated through four different Spanish themed centers in small groups. The students worked on a Spanish puzzle pieces matching game, a Spanish vocab memory game, a color by Spanish numbers and a silent reading center with all of our Spanish read aloud books. Ask your child how we played! 10 de mayo Now that our end of the year journals are complete, the first graders got to play a fun review game of Loteria, or Bingo! Feliz dia de San Valentin! February 1 More practice with los dias de la semana, the days of the week in Spanish. We also spent some class time today reviewing the Spanish color vocab words. January 10 Happy New Year!! We are now learning how to say los dias de la semana, or the days of the week. We practiced our new words, sang a song with these words and then we created a wheel manipulative with this information. Room 8 took this project home, while we kept Room 10's work to hang up in the classroom. December 14 Last day of work with our partes del cuerpo vocab. We did some practice aloud with our words, and also completed a written sheet labeling the parts of the body in Spanish (this was sent home). Finally we finished up our class today with a fun game using our Spanish vocab; ask your child how we played!!

November 30 November 16 The first graders took a break from our regular lessons to make Thanksgiving greeting cards, in Spanish, to give to someone special. We discussed some of the things we are thankful for, learned how to say them in Spanish and then included that on our cards. The students also wrote a short note of thanks on their cards. !Feliz dia de accion de Gracias! 19 de octubre 12 de octubre First graders are now moving on to a new unit of words, los partes del cuerpo - parts of the body. We practiced our words out loud, then we got in to small groups to work on a new project with our words. We will be creating skeletons and then labeling their body parts with our Spanish vocab words. Then we will decorate the hallway for Halloween with our skeleton posters! Next week, our word list will come home after we finish this new project.
